Here in Hostal Avenida we have produced a short list of the main sites to see in the city. In fact, the city has so many sites and monuments to visit that it would be impossible to summarize it all in just a few lines… Our objective is just to give you some basic information so you get the general idea of what you will find in our city.

Monuments of Madrid

What you can´t miss:

  • The Royal Palace, its Gardens (Sabatini, Campo del Moro…) and the Museum of Arms.
  • The Almudena Cathedral.
  • The Temple of Debod.
  • The Retiro Park (with the Avenue of the Statues, the monument of Alfonso XIII, the statue of the Fallen Angel and the famous lake…).
  • Puerta del Sol (Everybody should get a picture in front of the Oso y el Madroño, the bear and the strawberry tree, the symbol of Madrid!)
  • Plaza mayor (just take a walk, eat one of those traditional “bocadillos de calamares”, calamari rolls, or simply see the performances of the street artists in this square…).
  • The Cibeles fountain (beautiful for everybody even if they don’t support Real Madrid).
  • Puerta de Alcalá (a must-see… that’s why two great Spanish singers, Ana Belén and Victor Manuel, wrote a song about it.).
  • The museums: Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofía (they don’t need introductions).
  • Alcalá de Henares, El Escorial and Aranjuez (World Heritage Sites);
  • Also, the city of Toledo is only 45 minutes by coach.

In the Gran Vía … or very near

  • Outstanding buildings (Capitol, Telefónica, Grassy, Metrópolis, Madrid-París …).
  • Theatres (Príncipe, Marquina, Arenal, Compac…)
  • Shops (Fuencarral Market, Corte Inglés, FNAC; streets of Gran Vía, Preciados, Carmen…)
  • Gastronomy (bars, restaurants, cafés, pubs, nightclubs… something for everybody…)
